Historian and author Gage McKinney will speak on the life of George Starr and his recently released book: Gold Mining Genius - A Life of George William Starr.
Starr, a widely-known mining man, became associated with the fabulous gold-producing mine, the Empire, in 1887, through his cousin, William B. Bourn, owner of the mine. After six years in Grass Valley, Starr accompanied John Hays Hammond to South Africa on a mining venture, returning to California in 1898, when he became superintendent of the Empire mine, a post he held until his retirement in 1934.
Starr was elected first president of the Gold Mining Association of America at its inaugural meeting in San Francisco in 1933.
