Birth, marriage, and death data form the building blocks of your family tree. Government records for these events are called vital records, containing the names, dates, places, and (usually) relationships that uniquely identify a person. Vital records are called “Primary Sources” because they are created at the time of an event by a reliable witness, and the information on them is usually correct. Learn when states started requiring these records, where you can find them, substitutes for when you can’t find them, and more. Includes 8-page handout.

Poetry Happy Hour "STARS"
Join poet laureate, Kirsten Casey, on an exploration of the stars through poetry.
How often do we take a moment to actually appreciate the reliable constellations in the summer sky? Write a star poem, or just learn more about space from a new perspective at this program.
"We point out the stars that make Orion as we take out the trash, the rolling containers a song of suburban thunder.
It's almost romantic as we adjust the waxy blue recycling bin until you say, Man, we should really learn some new constellations."
- Ada Limon, from "Dead Stars"
