How and why do bees pollinate plants?Why do bees swarm?Is there a bee shortage?         Why are there different kinds of honey?Can I use honey as an antibacterial?These questions and more are answered and/or discussed in a lively presentation.   Participants will learn about the fascinating society of bees as well pollination, honey making and harvesting, bee reproduction and the medicinal qualities of honey.  They will feel and smell beeswax and honey frames, see giant photos and film clips of various bee activities and taste different kinds of honey. Don’t forget the stars of the show!  Participants will be able to see live bees working on a multitude of jobs! Stay and Play is a play group and storytime for kids age 0-5 and their adults. We especially invite nontraditional caregivers (friends, family members, and neighbors) who care for children in an informal way. Each week features open play with fun and creative early literacy toys, as well as a short storytime, snacks for kids and coffee/tea for adults. Stay and Play is outdoors in the back yard of the Grass Valley Library except on days when it is 40° F or below, precipitating, or smoky with a 150+ AQI. Let's see if we can help Azaleah Lane solve a mystery! The Azaleah Lane Book Club will meet every two weeks, and we'll discuss a few chapters at a time. The book club will culminate with a visit from Davis author, Nikki Shannon Smith, at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, July 26 at Madelyn Helling Library. This program is best suited for ages 6-8. Pick up an honor book copy of The Amazing Life of Azaleah Lane in the children's room after June 1. -------When her baby sister, Tiana, realizes her favorite stuffed frog, Greenie, is missing, Azaleah promises to help her find him—but will she have enough time to help Tiana and complete her school project?Third grader Azaleah Lane is anxious to get home and start her diorama of Nikita the tiger after a visit to the National Zoo in Washington, D.C. However, before she can get started, she must help Tiana find Greenie. Oldest sister Nia is of little help, as she’s busy preparing to play Dorothy in her middle school production of The Wiz. In order to complete her diorama and help Tiana solve the mystery of Greenie’s disappearance, Azaleah must prioritize her tasks and pay attention to the clues around her. This inaugural book in the Azaleah Lane series is a fast-paced and fun read, and Azaleah is a sympathetic, likable narrator who, like readers, is learning new vocabulary all the time. She thinks aloud as she works to solve the mystery, occasionally (and realistically) losing patience with the sobbing Tiana. Open Slow Jam at the Library it the program for you!Bring you instrument, learn a few cords and walk away with a tune that you can play on your own.  This is a great program for beginners and more experienced musicians to have an opportunity to play in a group and be a part of a musical community.If you don't have a string instrument, you can check one out form the library.  We have guitars and ukuleles available in our catalog that are free to borrow.
