Governor’s Workgroup Tours Youth Center

On August 29th, Governor Newsom's juvenile hall workgroup held their meeting at the Nevada County Youth Center, formally Nevada County's Juvenile Hall.  The workgroup consisted of statewide stakeholders assigned by the Governor's office.  This workgroup is tasked with evaluating the decrease in Juvenile Hall populations and the options that may exist.

During a tour of the Youth Center, Chief Probation Officer Mike Ertola presented the County's vision to provide youth prevention programs and keep a small portion of the facility for detention. Some prevention programs include, but are not limited to, a partnership with the Nevada County Superintendent of Schools and the 4-H Youth Development Program, plus moving the Sheriff's dispatch to the facility.  The workgroup stated they were very impressed with the out-of-the-box vision and made numerous statements how encouraged they were.

Open House Hosted for Ponderosa West Grass Valley Defense Zone

Nevada County Board of Supervisors Heidi Hall, Sue Hoek, Dan Miller and Office of Emergency Services joined CAL FIRE NEU and the Fire Safe Council of Nevada County at a community open house designed to share information about the Ponderosa West Grass Valley Defense Zone Project

Ponderosa West Project is a shaded fuel break. Unlike a fire break, a shaded fuel break does not remove all vegetation to bare mineral soil. Rather, living vegetation will be modified or reduced to limit a fire’s ability to spread rapidly. All were on hand to discuss the ecological strategy, considering both long-term forest health, and community safety.
