Excessive Heat Warning through Friday Night

The National Weather Service Sacramento has issued an Excessive Heat Warning for the Valley and Foothills through 10:00 p.m. Friday, August 16th. Our relatively mild summer is heating up this week, with temperatures projected to hit between 95-105 degrees in parts of Western Nevada County.

During this heat wave, the Nevada County Public Health Department would like to remind everyone that higher temperatures can be dangerous for all persons, but especially the very young, senior citizens, and those with chronic medical conditions.

Insurance Town Hall

Nevada County Insurance Town Hall on August 22nd 

Nevada County is partnering with the California Department of Insurance to host an Insurance Town Hall on homeowners insurance with California Insurance Commissioner Ricardo Lara, District III Supervisor Dan Miller and District II Supervisor Ed Scofield on Thursday, August 22nd at 6:00 p.m. at the Foothills Events Center in Grass Valley.

In addition to learning about available resources and actions taken both locally and at the state level, there will be a moderated discussion for attendees get answers to their questions. Residents are asked to submit their questions in advance online at At the event, attendees will also be able to submit questions to the California Department of Insurance for further follow up from department staff.

Take our CodeRED Test Survey

Nevada County Office of Emergency Services Issued CodeRED Test

On August 15th, the Nevada County Office of Emergency Services (OES) conducted a test of the opt-in CodeRED emergency alert system. A substantial number of Nevada County residents registered for the notifications and received the test alert Thursday. The test was conducted to improve efficiencies, raise awareness of the communication tool, and encourage community enrollment. In addition, the test helped identify phone numbers no longer in service.

Ready Nevada County: Wings of Morning Neighborhood Preparedness Efforts

This year's wildfire season is here, and Nevada County's Office of Emergency Services has been working to raise awareness, and mobilize the community to prevent and prepare for wildfire. However, without the community's participation and mobilization at the neighborhood level, these goals can't be achieved.

Dave Kapler's neighborhood association Wings of Morning Neighbors has a few ideas on how to increase your neighborhood's safety in the event of a fire and gets together regularly to discuss their wildfire safety plan. To start, his neighborhood coordinates community work days to clear private roads that residents would use during an evacuation and encourages regular maintenance of vegetation around the home as well.

Golden Ticket holders

Riders 80+ Ride Gold Country Stage Free with Golden Ticket

The Golden Ticket is a Lifetime Pass for seniors aged 80 and over. The Golden Ticket will provide the pass holder with unlimited free rides on all Gold Country Stage routes (1 – 6) for the lifetime of the pass holder. Eligibility is open to all Nevada County seniors with proof of age (valid California ID card or Driver's License).

In addition, Gold Country Stage is partnering with Connecting Point to offer Travel Training to any interested persons seeking assistance in utilizing the fixed route bus system (Gold Country Stage).

Note: the Golden Ticket pass is not for use on Gold Country Lift paratransit services.

Library Hosts Nevada County Stories

Following the community interest in local stories from this Spring's Nevada County Reads and Writes, this Fall the Madelyn Helling Library will host a series called Nevada County Stories on the fourth Saturday of each month from 10:00 a.m. until noon.

Interested participants are invited to come to the kick-off on Saturday August 24th for a discussion and brainstorming session about the stories of Nevada County. Participants will discuss storytelling, creating stories, collecting stories, recording and keeping stories. Registration is encouraged but not necessary. All are welcome!

Job Openings at Nevada County: District Attorney Investigator

Nevada County employs approximately 800 employees covering a full range of services and positions, from accountants to wastewater treatment system operators. In Nevada County, quality of life comes first. It is the only rural California county with two designated Cultural Arts Districts and is known for its abundance of outdoor recreational activities.

The District Attorney's Office is hiring a District Attorney Investigator. Each day in this office is comprised of new opportunities investigating activities and crimes that may be prosecuted by the District Attorney's Office. Investigators coordinate and collaborate with many law enforcement justice partners to gather and preserve evidence and testimony. The ideal candidate must be comfortable and well versed in the use of technology, criminal investigative techniques and procedures, basic crime scene management, preservation of evidence, search and seizure, and laws of arrest. The successful candidate must possess an intermediate CA POST Certificate and qualify as a Peace Officer under PC 832.
