Cold Weather Shelter Opening this Weekend through Monday

The National Weather Service is predicting cold winter weather in the foothills this weekend with lows dipping below 30 degrees.

In an effort to collaborate for one of our most vulnerable populations, the City of Nevada City, Sierra Roots and the County of Nevada have activated their Extreme Weather Shelter Protocol in an effort to temporarily shelter homeless citizens in our community. A Cold Weather Shelter will be open from 4:30 p.m. until 7:00 a.m. on Saturday night, December 1st, at the SEAL High School-Multi-Purpose Room located at 505 Main Street in Nevada City, and Sunday and Monday nights, December 2nd and 3rd, at the Veteran’s Hall located at 415 North Pine Street in Nevada City.

Further assistance for homeless families can also be gained by dialing 2-1-1 to talk to a call center representative at 211 Connecting Point about available services.

While the most destructive fire in California was only recently 100% contained and our community bears witness to the unimaginable devastation experienced in Paradise, fire prevention and preparedness are at the top of everyone’s mind. The threat of wildfire is urgent and efforts to safeguard the community require a multi-jurisdictional, all-hands-on-deck community approach.

Local agencies are partnering to host a Wildfire Prevention and Preparedness Town Hall on December 5th, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. in the Board Chambers of the Eric Rood Administrative Center with representatives from CAL FIRE, local law enforcement, city officials, and staff from Nevada County. Attendees will have an opportunity to learn from fire experts and community leadership, as well as ask questions and provide solutions. A resource fair will take place simultaneously in the Rood Center lobby.

Giving Tree Program: Give Gifts to Foster Children this Holiday!

Nevada County Child Welfare Services has distributed their annual “Christmas Giving Tree” at different locations throughout Nevada County. Every December, Nevada County Child Welfare Services works with community service providers and partners to collect and donate Christmas presents for children in foster care. Participate this holiday season by picking up a tag with the child’s age, gender and some of their current interests or wishes from a Christmas Giving Tree at the following community locations:

Sandbags for Winter Storms

Winter weather is here and the Nevada County Office of Emergency Services (OES) would like to remind residents that free sand and sandbags are available at four locations:

Next to the Nevada County Warehouse on the corner of Highway 49 and East Broad Street in Nevada City
Penn Valley Fire Protection District located at 10513 Spenceville Road in Penn Valley
North San Juan Community Hall located at 10057 Reservoir Street in North San Juan
Higgins Fire Station 21 located at 10106 Combie Road

Residents must bring their own shovel to fill the sandbags with sand. Sandbags are very limited, so we do request that residents only take what they plan to use for protection of their personal property.

First Installment of Property Tax Bills Due by December 10^th

Property tax bills were mailed October 31st. If you have not received your tax bill, you can retrieve a copy from the My Tax Bill web page. You will need to enter in your new Assessment/Fee number. This number is now a 12 digit number, taking your old Parcel number and adding zeros in the first and seventh positions. Example: 12-345-67-000 becomes 012-345-067-000.

First installments are due postmarked no later than December 10, 2018. Payments can be made online through e-check or credit/debit card (convenience fee applies), by mail, in-person or dropped in our 24-7 drop box located in the parking lot of the Rood Government Center in Nevada City.

National Family Caregiver Month: Caring for the Caregiver

National Family Caregivers Month

November is National Family Caregivers Month. What better way to appreciate caregivers in our community but to celebrate their dedication and hard work, and help protect their health and the health of their loved ones.

Connecting Point hosted its annual In Home Supportive Services (IHSS) Provider Appreciation event and offered a beautiful Thanksgiving-style dinner for all providers and numerous fun activities for folks to participate in. Nevada County's Senior Outreach Nurses were there to administer flu shots. They administered approximately 16 vaccines! Adult Services Senior Outreach Nurses help to vaccinate our community as only part of their many duties to our needy senior residents.

Thank you to all caregivers for all of the hard work that you do and thank you to the Senior Outreach Nurses for helping to protect the health of our caregivers and our community.
