New Bear River Library to Open in February

Nevada County's new Bear River Library opens February 1st with expanded services for the South County community.

The new location is just a short walk from Bear River High School and is a 2,500-square-foot space at 11010 Combie Road in the former Holiday Market shopping center adjacent to Lake of the Pines. It will be open and staffed five days a week, Tuesday through Saturday.  The new library will also feature Open+, an access model for libraries allowing patrons to use the facility during unstaffed hours. Simply scan the library card's barcode at the front door and have access to computers, WiFi and the children’s play area and have the ability to check out materials from the collection. Learn more about Open+ access and schedule an orientation on the Open+ webpage

With the passage of Measure A in 2016, the library now has the funding to make this move possible, thanks to the taxpayers of Nevada County.  Measure A is a 15 year library bond that provides a quarter of a cent of all sales tax to the Nevada County Library. With Measure A funding, the Library has promised to commit to service priorities for the public, including the expansion of our physical library spaces and increase open public hours. The new location will meet both of these priorities to better serve the South County community with expanded hours, impactful library services and increased materials in a space of its own.

Still, the move is bittersweet as the Nevada County Library enjoyed sharing resources and space with the Bear River High School for the past 20 years. The public library staff had a built-in teen audience, from whom they could learn about trends and informational needs of this age group. Library staff look forward to hosting teen programs and provide opportunity for teen volunteers at the new location.
