New Affordable Housing Development Completed

Brunswick Commons Rsign with the building in the background

We recently celebrated the completion of Brunswick Commons, a multi-family housing community overlooking Brunswick Basin in Grass Valley that will provide 41 units of affordable housing to homeless or at-risk individuals. The development includes a community center with a computer room, exercise room, community room, communal kitchen, and laundry facilities. A playground overlooks Brunswick Basin. This development is a huge win in a region where housing is becoming increasingly expensive and we are seeing an increase in the number of people experiencing homelessness.

I helped this project come to life through my role on the board of the Regional Housing Authority (RHA) of Sutter, Yuba, Colusa and Nevada Counties, which works to enhance communities by creating and sustaining decent, safe and affordable living environments that foster stability and increase self-sufficiency for people with lower incomes. In addition to the significant role the RHA played, Nevada County contributed over a million dollars in funding from No Place Like Home grant funding.

Since 2017, nine developments have been in planning, active construction, or have been completed, totaling 311 new units of affordable housing throughout the county: 157 units for Western Nevada County and 154 units for Eastern County. With completion of Brunswick Commons, 222 units of affordable housing have been completed across all those projects. Empire Mine Courtyard will bring an additional 22 units online in the next few weeks, and Cashin’s Field is slated for completion in early spring with another 51 units of affordable housing. By Spring of 2023, 295 new units of affordable housing will be available for residents in Nevada County.
