Did you know there are many fun and rewarding opportunities to get involved in your community? In a smaller community like ours, volunteers are the lifeblood of important projects and events that simply wouldn’t happen without them. Below are just a few of the opportunities I am aware of, followed by their point of contact. Please reach out to me if you know of others so that I can share them in future newsletters.

  • The Penn Valley Rodeo’s Gymkhana Series from June to October. Reach out to Patty Wilkins for more information:
  • Penn Valley Rodeo:
    • Rodeo grounds volunteers:
    • Rodeo preparation the week of the rodeo (week whacking and cleanup): Frank Goss at (530) 277-0727
    • Team of eight needed to clean the sponsor banners (Wed., May 18 at 9 am): Frank Goss at (530) 277-0727
  • Penn Valley Fire Auxiliary Thrift Shop volunteer staff: or (530) 432-2195
  • Penn Valley Chamber of Commerce office volunteers: or (530) 432-1802
  • Penn Valley Community Center board of directors: Board Chair Frank Goss (530) 277-0727
  • Rotary Club of Penn Valley project volunteers:
  • Interfaith Food Ministry needs volunteers at their Grass Valley location (440 Henderson Street) and is also asking for anyone who wants to donate fruits and veggies from their home garden or farms to connect with Sierra Harvest’s Glean program: 530-265-2343 or

I volunteer my time with numerous organizations, including the Rough and Ready Grange. It’s just my way of giving back. I challenge you to volunteer for something in the near future. As the Nevada County motto goes, we’re Better Together.
