South County Area Municipal Advisory Council

This week, the South County Area Municipal Advisory Council held its second meeting to kick-off early work and orientation on the Higgins Area Plan. Specifically, on February 9, 2021 the Board created and established the South County Area Municipal Advisory Council (SC MAC) via Resolution 21-035 to advise the County regarding the development, passage, and implementation of the Higgins Area Plan.  

The SCMAC includes 9 members and two alternates that include Vickie Hawkins, MaryJane Huenergardt, Brian Hamilton, Jim Mathias, Tony Gosalvez, Jake Jacobson, Erin Sullivan, Jon Schilling, William Checkvala, Gloria Siegle, and Dallan Packard. 

The current Higgins Area Plan was approved in November of 2000 and has been the guiding plan for development within the plan’s current boundaries for over twenty years.  The work of the SCMAC will have a similar impact on a larger area for the next ten to twenty years. However, the SCMAC will only be one component of a broader community engagement effort to gain the community’s input its vision for the community in the coming decades. 

At the SCMAC meeting on Wednesday, the Council elected Erin Sullivan as Chair and Jim Mathias as Vice-Chair for the group. They also received a presentation by Nevada County Principal Planner Tyler Barrington and Associate Planner Kyle Smith who will be serving as the staff leads for the project. Staff also provided an update on bringing in planning and design firm PlaeWorks to assist with the project. Members of the SCMAC also had an opportunity to meet with District IV Planning Commissioner, and former Penn Valley Area MAC Chair, Mike Mastrodonato, on his experiences with the development and adoption of the Penn valley Area Plan in 2020. 

Last but not least, Staff will be launching a webpage for the SCMAC on in the coming weeks. In the meantime, interested members of the community are encouraged to attend the meeting and to sign up for notifications at here by creating Notify Me account and signing up for notifications including meeting announcements and meeting Agenda postings.
