Steps You Can Take to Deal With Second-Hand Smoke in Your Apartments

If you are a non-smoker experiencing secondhand smoke in your apartment, please contact us here at the Nevada County Tobacco Prevention Program to find out how we can help. Below are steps you can take to protect you and your family from drifting second-hand smoke:

  • If you are bothered by your neighbors drifting smoke, try resolving the problem with them first by coming to a voluntary agreement. The agreement could limit where or when your neighbor smokes.
  • Talk to your apartment manager about making the common areas or individual apartment units smoke-free. Let them know that we can help!
  • Ask your neighbors to sign a petition supporting smoke-free housing units and show it to the owner / managers.
  • Some properties do not allow smoking in common areas such as hallways, stairways and laundry rooms. Have your manager post signs in areas where smoking is not allowed.
  • Remind your apartment manager/owner that it is legal to adopt a smoke-free policy.
