Egress/Ingress Hazardous Tree Removal Project

Picture1Project Overview

As part of the Egress/Ingress Fire Safety Project that concluded earlier this year, a tree survey was completed to identify hazard trees that pose a threat to the public roadways, evacuation routes, and the community. This survey was completed by a Registered Professional Forester on roughly 160 miles of County maintained roads and identified approximately 400 dead and dying trees within the County right-of-way in need of removal. The Hazard Tree Removal Project will remove these trees and will enhance evacuation efforts during an emergency.

This project started on November 28, 2022 and completed the removal of approximately 250 trees by the end of 2022.  Due to weather conditions at the higher elevations the project was suspended as of December 15th but has now resumed operations as of February 8, 2023.  Crews will be completing the higher elevations as the weather allows.  Please see the active map below for the status of all roads included in this project.

Funding for this project is provided by the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection as part of the California Climate Investments Program.

Environmental Review

The Public Works Department has reviewed the project for compliance with the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) and has identified the project as being Categorically Exempt under California Code of Regulations Sections 15301(c), Repair and maintenance of existing streets; 15301(h), Maintenance of existing landscaping and native growth; and 15304(i), Minor alterations to land.  A Notice of Exemption approved by the Nevada County Board of Supervisors has been posted with the Nevada County Clerk’s Office.
