Safely Surrendered Baby
The Safely Surrendered Baby Law allows a parent or other person who has lawful custody of a baby to surrender that baby, up to 72 hours old, at a safe surrender site without criminal prosecution for abandonment, provided that there is no suspicion of abuse or neglect. Newborns may be surrendered to any public or private hospital room, or to certain fire station designated by the Nevada County Board of Supervisors or the local fire agency.
The law also allows for a 14 day period during which the person who surrendered the baby can reclaim the baby by calling the Nevada County Child Welfare Services Hotline at 530-273-4291 or toll free at 888-456-9380.
